Our design starts by inscribing the northern edge of the site with a single storey extensionarticulated by a brick wall. This establishes a strong street frontagealongAliwal Road andonto Boutflower Road, whilst remaining sensitive to the existing terraced houses behind. The designresponds to the different site conditions and boundary. The proposalis orientated axially alongAliwal Road and opens onto an enclosed courtyard garden, minimising the need for openings onto the street and adjacent properties. Additional light is provided using skylights.The boundary between the street and dwelling is carefully choreographed and blurred using a series of recessedwindows, which afford panoramic views along the street, shuttered openings in the courtyard garden.Other than the garden wall, the proposalisconstructed using prefabricated cross laminated timber cassettes. This form of construction is inherently sustainable, cost effective and quick to assemble – minimising the buildings' environmental impact and disruption to local residents.
